Europe is pursuing genomic medicine through a uniquely collaborative approach. The 1+ Million Genomes Initiative aims to give 1 million EU citizens access to genomic medicine by 2025. National genome programs in the UK (Genomics England), France (Plan France Médecine Génomique), the Netherlands, Estonia, Finland, and others are building the infrastructure for population-scale genomic healthcare within universal health systems. The European model — with its emphasis on equity and data governance — offers lessons for the world.
